Become A Positive Person

Being in a depressed state causes what I call the “Me Syndrome”. If you are depressed or know someone who is depressed, what is the most prevalent thing on your mind? When I am in that zone all I can think about is how awful I feel. I don’t function as a wife or a mother and I just want to be left alone. The last thing on my mind is keeping my house clean; doing dishes, making money or giving hugs and kisses to my children. When I come out of these zones I am riddled with guilt when I see the state that I have left my family in. My children become very sensitive and fight and argue with me and each other. My husband is afraid to talk to me for fear he might say something to set me off. My home is in total disarray. The scary thing to me is that I don’t notice any of this while I’m in a state of depression. All I notice is that no one respects my right to privacy. Thus, the “Me Syndrome”.
I believe that a negative attitude sets limits in our minds and constrains us as to what we can accomplish. “I can’t” insures you won’t. By eliminating the word “can’t” from your vocabulary, you open up the possibility that you can. Your first step in overcoming depression is to recognize that you are depressed and that you want your life to change. This step may seem so simple to someone who is in a healthy state of mind, but for those who suffer from depression, you will realize this step is not as easy as it sounds. Make no mistake; you cannot overcome that which you do not acknowledge.
Second, you need to change your thought process. A person in a depressive state often cannot see anything good happening in their future. I have found that visualization is the best way to change my thoughts. Therefore, I suggest writing out three to four statements of positive things you want to see in your future. The only difference is that I want you put it in a way that sounds like it’s already happened. For example, one of my biggest concerns is my family’s financial state. So a good statement for me to write out is: “I’m grateful to live the lifestyle I choose.” Notice that I did not use the words debt or bills. You need to avoid the words of the problems you’re trying to overcome. If you want to be happy, don’t use the word depressed in your statement. Once you’ve written out your statements put them each in three to four different places where you will see them several times a day: your bathroom mirror, car, work, nightstand are all good places. Every time you see them, read them out loud. You need to hear what you hope for.
Third, start each day with prayer or meditation. It’s okay to ask for help, but also through these methods you can tell yourself that you will succeed today. When you’re finished with your prayer/meditation…SMILE! You will have a good day.
I believe, with all my heart that the first step to overcoming depression is to first overcome the “Me Syndrome”. You still have a long road ahead of you, but if you can find positive in your life, you can know that the road does have a destination and it’s full of life and light.
